Race 5 - Saturday, September 17: Super D

XC stars perform at the Super D

By Steve Medcroft

If the Mammoth Mountain National Championships is a clear sign, Super D may become one of the most popular competitions in the NORBA series next year. More than 200 juniors, men and women signed up for Saturday's race including top cross-country pros like Adam Craig (Giant), Barry Wicks (Kona/Les Gets), Sue Haywood (Trek/VW) and Dara Marks-Marino (Ford/Specialized). Even 2005 women's Cross Country National Champion Mary McConneloug (Seven Cycles/Kenda Tire), retiring former World Champion Alison Dunlap (Luna Chix) and mountain-biking legend John Tomac got in the act.

In the men's race, the favourite was Maverick rider and 2005 NORBA National Series Super D Champion Mike West. But the long format downhill race, beginning at the top of one of Mammoth's 11,000 ft ski lifts and finishing 3000 ft and an average of twenty five minutes below at the resort's main lodge, attracted a huge field of competent bike handlers and West was nipped in time by Adam Craig. Arizona-based pro Kelli Emmett (Ford/Specialized) edged out Jamie Whitmore (Reebok) by twenty-nine seconds for her first National Championship jersey in the women's category.
