As usual, the short track event didn't disappoint in front of a huge crowd today. The Luna women were victorious for the second time this week with Katerina Hanusova taking the win, whilst in the men's race, young Australian Trent Lowe (Gary Fisher/Subaru) made a late move to snatch the win from under the feet of Geoff Kabush (Maxxis).

Over only seven laps of a very short course, the races lasted just over fifteen minutes for the men and nineteen minutes for the women, and racing goes out hard and fast with little room for error.

In the women's event it was Sue Haywood pushing the pace early, making a few attempts to get off the front without success. It was the Luna women who put the hammer down for the finale with Shonny Vanlandingham taking some strong pulls in order to launch her teammate Hanusova off the front. Coming around the bend for the final stretch to the finish, Vanlandingham had the lead and was able to hold it to the line. Sydor came through a few seconds later to take second place, earning the valuable time bonus seconds to keep her overall lead safe for another day. Taking third place was early aggressor Sue Haywood, with Dunlap coming in for fourth.

"I felt really good out there," said Hanusova after the race. "I just went for it in the last lap and made it to the line."

With strong numbers in the race, Hanusova said that it definitely makes things easier. "Its great to have three people in the team working together. It was such a short race, there wasn't really a lot of time for too much teamwork, but it does help."

As for tomorrow, Hanusova commented that it's definitely going to be the deciding day. "I'm just going to try and stay up there with the lead. That's my plan."

The men's race was just as exciting, with the Kona boys Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks setting the pace in the first couple of laps. Geoff Kabush (Maxxis) could be seen sitting right up there in third wheel until three laps to go when he launched an attack on the back climb. His lead immediately opened up, and as he seemed to be powering away for a sure win with a lap to go the chase started to move towards him, race leader Bart Brentjens doing the work at the front.

It was on this last lap, just as Brentjens had lessened the gap, that Lowe saw his opportunity and attacked around Brentjens, quickly moving up on Kabush. With half a lap to go Kabush was caught - the young Aussie had just started.

"When I got to Kabush I just accelerated because I didn't want him to catch my wheel," explained Lowe after the race. "When I got past him I looked back and noticed that I had a good gap and just drove it to the finish."

Kabush tried to hang on for second place, but Brentjens just pipped him on the line, forcing the Maxxis rider to settle for third place, with Liam Killeen coming in close behind for fourth.

But it was Lowe who took the mad dash race, explaining that he learnt about short course racing from the best, Paul Rowney - "Paul taught me not to be afraid to have a dig. He used to come from the back and never be afraid to hit the front or attack straight away. Maybe I need to be a little smarter than him because I don't have his horsepower, but I'll use the horsepower I've got. But nevertheless it worked for him; "I played my cards right. I could see Kabush coming back and when I saw that I started really thinking I could win."

In his first year with Gary Fisher/Subaru, Lowe has started with plenty of success not only off road but in the recent Redlands Classic; "it was good to show those roadies up," he said, "especially because they didn't know who I was. I also think I learnt something at Redlands. Perhaps that helped me with sitting the wheels here."
