Meirhaeghe has a better day, Dunlap continues form

Alison Dunlap (Luna Women) and Filip Meirhaeghe (Specialized) won the short track event at Sea Otter today in an amazing display of strength and form. Dunlap's win keeps her in the lead going into the final cross country stage tomorrow, with Meirhaeghe's win moving him a little closer to the lead with one stage remaining.

The short track course was two miles long and lasted 20 minutes, looping and winding around a short area on the side of a hill. The ground was dry with fast sections, but it was also rutted and tough in areas with a few sharp turns to negotiate.

In the women's race the pace was on from the start with the Luna team working well for Dunlap Early in the race Dunlap, Melanie McQuaid (Ford Racing), Katerina Hanusova (Luna Women) and Sue Haywood (Trek Volkswagen) found themselves away with McQuaid pulling hard to force the break. The break stayed away with the rest of the field totally strung out around the course before long.

By the last lap when McQuaid attacked again, the front-runners were catching the back end of the field. Dunlap was able to respond to McQuaid's move, chasing her down and passing her on the last half lap to take her second win for the tour. Dunlap's teammate Hanusova came in behind McQuaid to take third place, followed by Haywood who had picked herself up off the ground after crashing in the last lap and managed to hold on the fourth place, flat tyre and all. Rounding off the five person podium was yet another Luna woman, Shonny Vanlandingham.

Dunlap was once again please with her ride, but admitted that she "didn't know a 20 minute race could be so hard." Saying that she "suffered a lot out [on the course]," Dunlap added that she "still had strong legs" and was looking forward to the big race tomorrow."

As in the women's race, the men's race was strung out immediately. A big upset to the tour occurred immediately on lap one, when race leader Thomas Frischknecht (Swiss Power) took a fall on the first corner. Whilst Frischknecht had to spend the remainder of the race chasing in an attempt to keep his tour lead or at least minimize the damage, the race continued to be aggressive at the front.

Australian Paul Rowney (Factory Yeti) - and no, Paul has not retired and wants you all to know - drove the pace at the front eventually riding everyone of his wheel and going solo for a while. After a lap he was reeled in and Todd Wells countered the move getting a convincing gap on the field. It was World Champion Meirhaeghe who chased him down and then continued his momentum going off the front of the bunch himself.

His timely moved worked like a dream and the gap kept increasing until finally he took the race by 17 seconds from second place and made up for some of his time loss from the time trial the previous day. Leading the chase for the final two laps was Wells, until with half a lap to go Karl Platt (Rocky Mountain) made his move and soloed home to take second place. Roland Green (Trek Volkswagen) led in the rest of the group to take third place in front of Wells and Jeremy Horgan Kobelski (RLX Ralph Lauren).

Meirhaeghe said he felt "really good today" and decided to "wait to see what would happen in the race. All of a sudden," he added, "Wells had attacked and I decided to chase him down and keep going. I didn't plan on going off the front on my own. I thought a small group would go with me. When I looked back though, I had a gap and so it was even better."

Meirhaeghe knew that attacking today was "the only way to make up the time lost yesterday. I lost over a minute in the time trial but now I am back to within 16 seconds of the lead which is not much and puts me back in the running for the tour."
