Race 2 - March 3: Day 2, 86km

Rain doesn't deter riders

Day two's inclement weather didn't stop the riders from appreciating the alpine scenery of Australia's highest mountains.

For some, the day was about finishing the 60km Berghaus Mountain Traverse whilst for others, it was an opportunity to see some country they wouldn't normally race. The race started with a ride up the Ski Tube to Perisher Blue. Then it was across to Blue Cow Mountain and its views of Mount Kosciuszko and of the Main Range from Guthega Village. Riders also crossed the Snowy Plains before finishing their race on the shores of Lake Eucumbene.

South Australian Brett Anderson won the stage in 2:19:27, almost four minutes ahead of GC lead riders Andrew Blair, Jason English and Denis Van Mill, who all finished at 2:23:35

Anderson's win did not change the overall classification lead, in which Dennis Van Mill still trails Andrew Blair by a mere six seconds.

The women's category is tightening with Queenslander Naomi Hansen's four-minute win. She finished in 2:55:48 ahead of Canberra's Rosemary Barnes (3:00:13) which gave her the overall lead by 56 seconds.

Sydney's Heather Evans finished third for the day, nudging out fellow Sydneysider Kath Bicknell for third place overall.

Day three will giver racers another day of high country scenery before they descend into the coastal zone with its rain forests and sandy beaches. The forecast includes snow near the peaks and occasional showers elsewhere.
