Northcott and Smail win cross country national series opener

Mike Northcott and Annika Smail got 2009 off to a strong start when they won the elite men's and women's opening round of the New Zealand North Island Cross Country Cup in Rotorua.

Northcott's win came by just a bike length as he sprinted to the finish ahead of Stuart Houltham. The two had been battling it out with local rider and international road cycling talent and Classics' specialist Clinton Avery, who crashed out of his 20 second lead on a treacherously slippery descent just two kilometers from the end of the race.

The men finished their race in heavy rain. "The rain slowed us down a bit but we just pulled back a bit and rode with more caution," said Northcott according to Bike New Zealand's website.

In the women's race, Smail took the title by a large margin over first-year elite racer Monique Avery and Nicole Swain.

The two fastest average lap times of the day, albeit before the rain, were logged by U23 racers Patrick Avery and Dirk Peters. The two pushed each other to a thrilling sprint finish in which Avery defeated Peters. Both riders are part of the Rotorua Cross Country Development Squad.

140 racers travelled a new course that was a mix of singletrack, fire roads and technically testing sections, including a 300m climb in Whakarewarewa Forest

The next round of the series will happen at Woodhill Mountain Bike Park, 40 minutes from central Auckland on January 10.
