Race 1 - February 26: Hill climb

Bennett and Greene win hill climb opener

Experienced Nelson-based rider George Bennett proved too strong in the gruelling 3km hill climb, clocking 16:07. He held off Upper Hutt's Gavin McCarthy by just nine seconds with Australian James Walker third fastest.

Bennett, who has been mixing road cycling with mountain biking recently, is expected to challenge for the cross country honours on Saturday.

Dunedin's Erin Greene won the senior women's title ahead of Adrienne Hooper.

Perhaps the most outstanding performance of the day came from former national team cycling representative Susy Wood, who cleaned up the masters' division and grabbed the fastest women's time of the day, clocking 20:05 in perfect conditions.
