Race 3 - May 20: Verofit Stage 3
Racers overcome mechanicals and crashes in tough stage
All but two riders made it to the start line to tackle stage three through the McDonnell Ranges around Alice Springs. Commencing with a mass start from Telegraph Station, the riders completed a 46km course of technical and flowing singlerack.
The stage was riddled with stories of crashes and bike malfunctions but still camaraderie and enjoyment of tough mountain biking prevailed. The story of the race was from Matthew Fleming, of NSW, coming into stage three in second place. He flew over his handlebars and face planted into some rocks on a descent 32km into the race. He was in the lead group at the time of his crash. Luckily for Fleming, competitors Nick Both, Adrian Jackson, Perren Delacour and Tim Bennett, all with the potential to win this event, stopped to help out Fleming. Using their bandages from their compulsory first aid kits, they quickly dusted him off, stopped the bleeding and wrapped him up before continuing the race.
Bennett won a sprint to the finish to take line honours from Jackson and Delacour in two hours four minutes and 11 seconds with second and third just a second behind. Fleming managed to re-mount his bike and complete the stage in a commendable two hours eight minutes and 28 seconds, only four minutes behind the men that assisted him.
Overall , Jackson now leads from Delacour with race favourite Bennett in third.
In the women's race, there was a similar story of courage and perseverance from the women's leader, Imogen Smith from Brisbane. Only a kilometer from the start Smith lost her derailer after a collision with a rock and was unable to change her gears for the remainder of the race. She had periods where she had to get off and run her bike because it was too steep for the gear.
Unfortunately for Imogen she lost her leader's jersey to Naomi Hansen of Noosa who had a cracker of a race finishing in two hours 34 minutes 21 seconds over Jenni King four minutes later. Smith, obviously disappointed will try to have her bike fixed by race mechanics in time for the longest stage from Ross River Station back to Alice Springs.
Hansen on the other hand was elated with her performance and claims she "couldn't wipe the smile from her face the whole race" as she enjoyed the conditions more than yesterday. She admitted that in stage one the previous day, having never ridden in the Red Centre before, she had felt quite out of her depth and wanted to throw her bike in the sand on several occasions.
The longest stage, a 90km trek from Ross River Station back to Alice Springs, comes tomorrow.
