Race 1 - February 21: Hill climb

Wilding and Clapp win hill climb

Day one of the NZCT National Mountain Bike Championships began with the Hill Climb. Starting in the grounds of Wellington College, the competitors rode up the track titled the "gutbuster" and up Mt Victoria along parts of the track that will be used for the NZCT National Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Tim Wilding from Taupo had the quickest time of the day clocking in just under eight minutes with Upper Hutt rider Gavin McCarthy in second and Tony Hogg of Dunedin in third. Local knowledge assisted Tom Bradshaw and Wayne Hiscock in becoming the winners of the junior and masters men's event.

Racers covered the 2.2km course, which gained 154m, climbing from 33m elevation to 187m.
