MTB index page for all MTB content New Zealand National MTB Series - NENew Zealand, February 24-25, 2007Day 1 - February 24: DownhillBlenkinsop wins as Rankin retiresWanganui's Sam Blenkinsop won the elite men's downhill NZCT mountain bike national series, by winning the fifth and final round by just under three seconds from junior world champion Cameron Cole. Blenkinsop went into the final round needing a top three finish to cement the series title, a result he achieved in emphatic style down the 2.1 km course with a time of 3.01.86. Meanwhile Jenna Makgill won the elite women's race by nearly five seconds over Scarlett Hagen, but it was too little too late for Makgill as Hagen's second place was enough to give the former junior world champion the women's 2007 NZCT series title. Following the race Levin's Nathan Rankin, who finished third today and fourth overall in the national series, announced he will retire from the mountain biking following his upcoming international season after ten years of national series campaigns and five national downhill championship titles. Matt Scoles from Alexandra won the under 19 men's race, topping of a magnificent series for the 18 year-old who won four of the five rounds he raced in.
