Crash robs Taberlay of morning's gains

After the lunch break at the Rosebery velodrome, the closet trackies had an opportunity to show what they’re made of with a dash for cash sprint race on the oval track. Jongewaard looked to have the bunch under control until a shock attack from tandem riders Jason Hoernal and Bryn Couts. After getting the rig up to speed they looked unstoppable! It was too much too soon and the boys faded leaving Jongewaard, Taberlay and Alistair Farley to sprint for the folding. Down but not beaten, the tandem team gave it some MTB attitude cutting across the grass to again claim the lead but were pipped on the line by Jongewaard, Farley and Taberlay. Niki Fisher (ACT – Trek) continued her winning ways and had dinner paid for with just 90 seconds work.
The second stage of official racing takes in the beautiful Montezuma’s Falls near Zeehan. After a lengthy but gradual climb on road to the ghost town of Williamsford Wildside again turns on the dirt (and mud…) with a long gently uphill climb on old mining tramway to the falls. Spanning the falls is a 60 meter long, 25cm wide suspension bridge. You can imagine how bouncy thing get with 6 or 7 eager riders trying to get across, thankfully they’ve meshed in the sides! From here it’s a whole lotta big ring and muddy fun to the end of the track.
Not surprisingly Sid Taberlay was first to the bridge and started hammering the downhill. Lead moto rider Rob Eva said he couldn’t even keep up with Sid, the Tassie local drifting through every rutted corner in search of the time he lost yesterday.
After binning it myself once and having more sphincter clenching moments than I would care to mention, it’s not hard to see how Sid could have eaten it so comprehensively. Amazingly, he remounted and managed to cross the line in 3rd place, just two minutes behind stage victor Jongwaard.
The women’s race sees Niki Fisher extending her lead by a further 5 minutes in each stage today, her lead would seem to be unassailable over Katrin Van der Speigel and Lisa Mathison who seems to be going backwards at a rate of knots and is considering withdrawing, apparently due to a virus.
The light is at end of the tunnel for the riders of Wildside with tomorrow’s stages allowing riders to smell the ocean with a ride along the spectacular south west coast of Tasmania as well as an individual time trial back to Zeehan that includes a section of old mining railway tunnel.
