Tasmanian MTB XC 2006 Winter Series
Round 2 XC + Schools Champs, August 5, 2006
A good turn out to Round 2 of the Winter Series with 50 riders. Numbers were bolstered with the inclusion of the Schools Teams event (14 riders).
Ben Mather(LMBC) took out the Elite Men’s competition from LMBC over local lad Ben Grieve-Johnson (Dirt Devils) and Simon Fielding rounded out the three. A good effort from these guys to do the six laps as all they could smell was BBQ in their last couple of laps.
Elite women was won by Ro Fry, also from LMBC, ahead of Julie Borschman/Blake and Helen Wray.
In the expert classes the men saw Stuart Keep punch out a 15:51 first lap to get a commanding lead and keep (‘scuse the pun) it ahead of Andrew Maynard and Richard “Doctor” Quinn.
In the single speed category it was more about who had the trickest kit than actual lap times. Matt Grundy was a winner with the fluffy blue shorts. The racing was, however, taken out by Patrick badger.
Doug Hagger won Sport Men by a mere 2 seconds over Sam Robertson in the hottest contested category. Matt Clarke came in for third. Club President Adam Christopher was DNF with some excuse about catching the flu off his daughter Hayley.
Well done to Alison Mackay who was the only Sport woman.
10 riders contested Veterans Men and the eventual winner was Grant Rowbottom. Grant won by 1:05 over Eoin “I’m from Scotland”Ryan and 4:23 over Mark “Why can’t I race masters” Cashion.
Jane Guiver was the solo Vets woman. Nice win Jane.
The Schools competition saw three schools fielding teams, Dominic, Hutchins and Burnie.
The Year 7/8 Dominic team (4 members) did 1 lap each and took out their category in an elapsed time of 1:37:52. They were closely followed by the Hutchins Black team (2 members) who did 2 laps each in an elapsed time of 1:39:02.
The BHS Bandits took out the Year 9/10 teams of four over Hutchins A. The elapsed time were 3:02:05 and 4:36:51 respectively. A special mention needs to be made of David Robertson who lapped in 17:36 and 17:54 which was quicker than all but the Elite men and Expert men.
Thanks to all who came out and raced. Especially the guys from the north of the state. Also thanks to Michael “Mr. T” Thorne for getting the word out to the schools and running the event. Thanks also to the guys Mike made help me with rego etc. Next time I will give him a bit more notice.
