Hill dominates, Jonnier makes victroy visit
Perth’s Sam Hill dominated the second round of the National Series Downhill Sunday in Nannup, Western Australia. The world silver medalist won by a clear margin of 2.17.25 and also took out the fastest run of the day.
Hill, who helped to design the course was happy with how the course stood up to racing. “We did three runs today so the course didn’t change too much throughout the day,” he said.
Canberra’s Jared Rando was runner up to Hill for the second time in the Series and rode a 2.24.18. Third was Victorian rider, Liam Panozzo who nearly pipped Rando, missing the mark by just 60/100 of a second. World junior champion, Amiel Cavalier found his injured leg slowed his placings and finished sixth overall.
French champion, Sabrina Jonnier showed her international expertise today and won the elite women’s event. Jonnier’s best time out of the two runs was 2.40.49 which would have put her in with some of the elite men. However Jonnier has only started her return to training for the 2006 season overseas. “I think I could have gone quicker,” she said at the end of the day. “This course was a little dusty but the girls are very friendly,” she added.
Second was Emma McNaughton and third was Claire Whiteman.
Round 3 of the National Series Downhill continues in Thredbo in December.
