Sadlecka & Galinski take close wins in Poland

By Tomasz Piechal, Polish Olympic Foundation

Magda Sadlecka (Lotto) won the Polish Women's National Mountain Bike Championships Championships Sunday in Olsztyn near Czestochowa. Lotto teammates Maja Wloszczowska (2004 national champion) and Ania Szafraniec placed second and third respectively.

The Lotto riders took the contest into their own hands early, freezing out the rest of the field on the scenic course. The only question left to answer was in which order would the three dominant riders finish. After sticking together for most of the race, Sadlecka attacked the group on the last lap, overtaking Wloszczowska to win by just fifteen seconds. The win was Sadleka's second national championship in her senior career (she also won in 2001).

Pre-race favorite Marek Galinski (PSB-Atlas-Orbea) won the men's championship although not without a challenge from Lotto rider Dariusz Batek. Batek rode as a junior last year and closed to within a minute of Galinski before the end of the race. Galinski was deferential to the younger rival on the podium saying he felt that the race had revealed a future champion. "We shouldn't be surprised," Galinski said of Batek's performance. "He's achieved great results, even though this is his first year among seniors!"
