Peat & Atherton new champions
Steve Peat and Rachel Atherton took the top honours at the National downhill championships at Bringewood. On a swelteringly hot day, beneath clear skies, the competitors had to tackle a tight, technical and very dry course, with deep dust gathering on the lower sections and making the going unexpectedly slippery.
Rachel Atherton won the closest race of the day to take the Women's race by less than two tenths of a second from Helen Gaskell. Both seemed to be really flying when we saw them at the mid-point, with Gaskell in particular flying the first jump in the lower woods with speed, height and precision. Also looking good was Tracy Moseley, but the World Cup star finished well down and from the foliage her bike was carrying, she had clearly had problems in the upper reaches of the course.
Steve Peat regained his title, though the unexplained absence of the Atherton brothers (Gee was defending champion) took a little of the shine off it. However, it was Steve's first race back since recovering from his serious shoulder injury sustained at the Fort William NPS, so it wasn't a bad way to get back into the groove with the Europeans just around the corner and the worlds some six weeks away.
Steve also had the satisfaction of beating Marc Beaumont, who pushed him all the way and underlined the form which has made him Britain's most consistent performer on the World Cup circuit this season. Dan Stanbridge did a fine ride for third place.
