Queensland mountain bikers proved they had some local advantage by taking out the top three places in the Elite Women’s Cross Country yesterday at Kooralbyn. Over 120 riders from right around Australia lined up for the 5th National Series. Lee Schultz (Toowong), Sharon Heap (Gold Coast) and Erica Oldfield (Ipswich) finished first, second and third respectively well ahead of Donna Hamlin (Sydney) and Series leader Niki Fisher (Canberra).

Hot conditions and knowledge of the track assisted the three Queensland women who lead the race for five laps taking turn about at the front. Schultz used her climbing strength to surge ahead of Heap and Oldfield on the final lap. Schultz now has her sights set on the National Championships in five weeks. Fisher still maintains her Series lead and attributes her 5th placing to a tough 4 days of racing in Tasmania when she won the Wild Side event last week.

Athens Olympic women’s rider, Lisa Mathison was on the sideline watching the action after doctors advised her to rest following tests that revealed she was suffering a Fatigue Syndrome.

Canberra riders took the top two placings in the Elite Men’s Olympic Cross Country with Dylan Cooper just second ahead of Brent Miller. Cooper clocked the fastest lap time of the day with16 minutes and 12 seconds and completed the 7 laps in 1.59:38. Miller suffered a mechanical mishap which saw him fall in the 4th lap but he recovered to finish 1 minute behind Cooper. Cooper now takes the Series lead from Alistair Farley who was relegated to second overall. Murray Spink from Melbourne who finished third still maintains his third place in the Series. Fourth was Mark Frendo (Corinda) who stayed with the leading group for the first four laps.

In the Masters Men division, adventure racer, Brett Stevens lead the Gold Coast trio of Les Heap and Jack Weitenberg to the finish line to blitz Series leader Con Toparis from Canberra by over 4 minutes. In the Supermaster Men, Series leader, Alan Mumford (Carina) reasserted his dominance in the over 50’s age group by winning this round.
