Horgan-Kobelski and Dunlap solo to victory

Dunlap takes the win

Jeremy Horgan-Kobleski (RLX Ralph Lauren) and Alison Dunlap (Luna Women) took out today's cross country race in Sonoma on the newly built course at Infineon Raceway. Both soloed to victory finishing with a convincing gap over their closest rivals.

In the men's race Horgan-Kobelski took off early with Todd Wells and the pair quickly gained time of the chasing groups. Midway through the race, Wells broke a rear derailleur leaving JHK to continue alone. Paul Rowney attacked on lap two trying to bridge to the leader but was reeled back in after a lap. Despite the strong winds, Horgan-Kobelski was able to hold of the chasers and take the race by four minutes from Travis Brown, who had attacked out of a group of four on the final steep section where the riders were forced to run their bikes.

Rowney Managed to take third position with Ryan Trebon (Kona Clarks Les Gets) and Carl Decker (Giant Pearl Izumi) taking fourth and fifth respectively.

Horgan-Kobelski was happy with his win, admitting that he was worried after Wells left him. "It's easier to be with someone," he said, "but after Todd was out, I figured that everyone was hurting and I put my head down."

In the women's race Melanie McQuaid (Ford Racing) tried her hand early, splitting up the bunch taking only a few riders with her. In the small bunch of four were Dunlap, Jimena Florit (RLX Ralph Lauren) and Dara Marks-Marino's (Ford Racing). A little later McQuaid fell of the pace and Dunlap attacked and rode away from Marks-Marino and Florit.

Dunlap's time stretched out to over a minute on the chasing pair but had to work hard to hold them off, eventually finishing just over 30 seconds ahead. Behind Florit and Marks Marino were caught by Kelli Emmett (Specialized), Kerry Barnholt (Subary Gary Fisher) and Shonny Vanlandingham (Luna Women), but not for long. Florit and Marks-Marino finished together in a two up sprint for second place with Florit coming out on top. Emmett was able to take fourth place ahead of Vanlandingham to round off the podium positions.

Florit was humble about Dunlap going ahead of them mid race. "You always try to follow," she said, "but you can't always respond."

Dunlap was happy with yet another win for the season, but admitted it wasn't a walk in the park. "The course was hard," she said, "the descents were short, and the flats were windy. I was on the gas 99 per cent of the day."
