Stage 1 - May 15: Mountain Cross

Kintner and Bootes take day one

Jill Kintner (Yeti/Red Bull) and Australian Wade Bootes (Trek Volkswagen) took out the mountain cross today at Sonoma, California for the second round of the NORBA series. After crashing at Sea Otter, Kintner is back on track and in fine form, as is Bootes who is always a favourite of this event.

On a technical course with short straights that many compared to a BMX course, Tara Llanes (Giant/Pearl Izumi) finished second in the women's race, with Sabrina Jonnier (Intense) third and Katrina Miller (Jamis) fourth. Second in the men's race was Brian Schmith (Mongoose-Hyundai), with Eric Carter (Mongoose/Hyundai) and Michael Robinson (Intense) rounding off the top four.

Kintner won the qualifier and was undefeated on the day to eventually take the final win. "My strategy was to keep on winning," she said. "On this course you can't worry about anybody else, you just pedal."

Bootes was pleased with his win on the tricky course. "I just tried to follow the leader and stay out of trouble," he explained "There was a lot of luck in winning here, but you would have to be pretty skilful to be able to capitalize on your luck."
