Swiss triumph in round 1

Round one of the downhill competition saw plenty of excitement for the crowd of spectators in the McKinnon Forest at Aropaoanui about 30km north of Napier. Although most of the large field of 109 riders loved the course and enjoyed the bright sunny weather, a couple of top pro-elite riders had some fantastic crashes including our 2003 National Champion Justin Leov (Blenhiem), fresh from racing in Europe where he improved his current world ranking from 85th December 2002 to 20th. Leov managed to snap his bike in half after miss-landing the double jump. Nathan Rankin (Levin), who is the 2003 National Series winner, also crashed leaving it clear for Claudio Caluori from Switzerland to take out Round One in a time of 2 mins 32 secs 06. This 26 year old is the current Swiss DH Champ and ranked 29th in the world.

Bryon Scott of Auckland took second place in a time of 2 mins 33 secs 64 and a great result for Des Curry (Rotorua), who is in his first year of Pro-Elite competition, to finish third, only 2 secs 05 off the Swiss rider. Curry and two other young riders in their first year of Pro-Elite competition Reon Boe (Levin) and Craig Pattle (Rotorua) all managed to finish in the top ten which is a fantastic result for them.

In the women's competition there were two Pro-Elite riders - the up and coming 16 year old Scarlett Hagen of Queenstown, who finished second at the Junior World Champs 2003 in Europe, and an international rider, Tracy Moseley from Britain, who is ranked third in the world. Moseley finished first in a time of 2 mins 55 secs 51 and Hagen not far behind in a time of 2 mins 59 secs 42. They finished 33 and 39 respectively, in the overall competition.

The cross country competition is on tomorrow, ten minutes from Napier in the Tongoio Forest and with 100 pre-entries and more expected on-the- day there will be some great riding and excellent viewing for spectators.
