Maxxis Sunshine Series XC Round 5

Ipswich, August 8, 2004

Ipswich course takes its toll

By Sharon Payne

The exceptionally rocky course took its toll on leaders in the final round of the Maxxis Sunshine Series today in Ipswich . Series leader, Ryan Gittins and third placed, Regan Jefcoate flatted during the middle of the Elite Men's race and could not finish. Leading from the start, Mark Frendo avoided mechanical problems and took out his second win after returning from racing in Europe . Second was Andre Harvey with third going to Scott Finlay.

Overall series places were thrown into confusion with Gittins and Jefcoate on the sideline only able to pick up minimal points. Gittins maintained his series lead by taking 280 points ahead of Jefcoate with a total of 244 and team mate Andre Harvey moved up into third overall on 223 points.

Gold Coast's Juniors in the Under 17 division had better luck with Daniel Hallam and Zac MacAnally taking first and second place. Hallam also wins the series with total of 385 points and MacAnally finished second overall with 303 points.

Elite woman leader, Erica Oldfield used her local knowledge of the circuit to win convincingly. Second was Sharon Heap from the Gold Coast and third was Lee Schultz from Toowong. A total of 385 points gave Oldfield a clear first from Schultz on 320 points and Heap finishing third with 295 points.

Masters A division was unchanged with Robbie Gould from Everton Hills dominating the final round and also taking out the series from Alan Mumford( Carina Heights ) in second place. Second in the final round lifted Les Heap from the Gold Coast into third spot overall.

All rounder, James Maltman won the hotly contested Under 19 race after an untimely flat tyre caused series leader, David Whitney from the Gold Coast to withdraw. The elimination of Whitney left Maltman to win the series. Hayden Lester from The Gap placed third in the series.

Gold Coast's juniors in the Under 17 division had better luck with Daniel Hallam and Zac MacAnally taking first and second place. Hallam won the series with total of 385 points and MacAnally finished second overall with 303 points.

Cross country riders will now prepare for the State Championships at Gap Creek Reserve on 22 August. Downhill riders have their final round on Sunday at Magpie Creek, Mt Tambourine. For more information contact Gillian_Duncan@hotmail.com
