Decker and Pennington win muddy Mudslinger

Carl Decker (Giant) proved too much for the elite men at the Oregon State Championships. He out-paced Erik Tonkin (Team S & M/Kona) and Sean Babcock (Team S & M), besting both riders by less than a minute. In the women's race, Alice Pennington (Veloforma) took the title for second straight year. Pennington defeated Sue Butler (Monavie / Cannondale) and Karen Dewolfe (Team Dirt).

Mild weather and some rain turned what could be a dry course into the traditional Mudslinger once again as 275 racers lined up for this year's edition. With race temps in the mid-50s by 10:00 am, riders were taking off jackets and arm warmers to prepare for the first 2.5-mile climb. Riders tackled six to seven trail sections mixed between gravel road climbs over the 12 or 24 mile courses.

As racers crossed the finish line, volunteers dressed as clowns pulled tags from the muddy racers backs.
