MTB index page for all MTB content Pan American MTB Championships - CCSantiago, Chile, March 20-22, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Race Next Race Race 2 - March 20: DownhillAmerican Van Dine takes his chances for a win in ChileAfter the seeding run, Chilean riders looked to be the favorites in the men's downhill, but Chris van Dine took his chances in the final and ended up making history after winning the first elite gold medal for the US. Van Dine had been training for more than a month at Chile, living in the ski centre of La Parva, and racing a bunch of local races. His efforts paid off when he beat Brazilian Markolf Berchtold and all the local riders who were hoping to show their abilities with a win. Local rider Pedro Ferreira finished third. La Parva Bike Park hosted all the gravity events for the 13th Pan American Games. That included a hard, loose downhill track at more than 3,000 meters above sea level. On the women's side, Dianna Margraff repeated her title from last year as she defeated Verónica Miranda from Chile and Rachel Bauer from the US. Junior Alexander Grigoriew proved to be the local star. The young national champion proved his consistency after with a time of 3:07.147. Overall, Chile had a good day with wins in six of the ten downhill categories: junior men, master A1 (Ignacio Barbosa), A2 (Sebastián Vásquez), B1 (Cristián Amaro), B2 (Juan Alejandro Valverde) and C (Alejandro Grigoriew Sr., father of junior winner Alexander) categories. The Grigoriew's made Pan American history with their joint father & son gold medal wins.
