Final day shakes up men's GC

The inaugural BMC Mountains to Beach race finished in spectacular fashion on Narooma's main beach with riders crossing the line in the sand as the surf rolled in. The riders covered more than 375km since Monday, but there were still a few sprints to the finish line. Others were happy just to finish.

None more so than Jason English. He needed to finish at least 3:27 in front of rival Andrew Blair to claim the lead. Blair finished third in the day's stage in 1:58:09, and English beat him over the line by 3:39 – to win the Solo Men's Open by just 20 seconds.

It was a nervous three minutes and 39 seconds for English as he waited for Blair to cross the line. Blair was disappointed to have lost the lead by so little, but philosophical about the defeat, as he and English are good friends off the race track.

Second place today went to Dennis Van Mill in 1:58:01. It was not enough to bump Blair down from second.

The women's results were not nearly as close, but this didn't stop the competitive spirit showing through, with Naomi Hansen pushing herself all the way to finish in 2:29:69.

Hansen won the Open Women's category by a convincing 58:55. Heather Evans and Belinda Porter were the second and third place getters. Porter was more than two hours behind Hansen. Rosie Barnes, Hansen's main rival early in the week was forced out on Day 3 with an injury.

Of the 172 competitors who entered the race, 153 completed the entire event, with only four riders withdrawing due to injury.
