MTB index page for all MTB content North Island Cross Country Cup #3- NEWellington, New Zealand, January 18, 20092008 Results Results Final standings Northcott and Sheppard capture third round wins in WellingtonThe third and final round of the New Zealand North Island Cross Country Cup was held around Mt Victoria in Wellington. Mike Northcott and Samara Sheppard won the elite men's and women's races.
Northcott led the elite men's race from the start while Carl Jones found a welcome return to form and crossed the finish line in second place with Gavin McCarthy hot on his heels placing third. Local rider Samara Sheppard raced on her home track for a win in the elite women's race. Nic Leary and Katherine O'Neill finished second and third, rounding out the women's podium.
Dirk Peters remained at the top of the podium in the Under 19 men's race, finishing an astounding six minutes and three seconds ahead of Patrick Avery and cementing his North Island Cross Country Cup title.
The track was deemed the most technical of the series so far, and heavy rainfall in the morning resulted in an extra challenging track for those racing in the morning. The sun and wind dried out the track for the afternoon race and riders in the elite and under 19 categories raced under ideal conditions. "I thought it was the best course of the three North Island races, and we were lucky with the weather drying up the course for the afternoon," said Under 19 women's winner Sasah Smith, who has been mountain biking for five years and raced all three races in the North Island Cup. She will head to Nelson in February for the New Zealand National Championships.
The South Island Cross Country Cup will happen in February with races being held in Dunedin, Timaru and Queenstown. The best four results from the six North Island and South Island Cups accrue points for riders towards the overall 2009 Raboplus MTB Cup title in each category. Next weekend, downhill racers will head to Levin for the final round of the North Island Downhill Cup. Competitors will then head to the South Island to race in Dunedin, Queenstown and Blenheim before both cross country and downhill disciplines compete in the New Zealand National Mountain Bike Championships.
