Cairns mountain biker, Mick Hannah, surprised onlookers when he won the national championship in Canberra yesterday in his first race back after a one year lay off. The professional downhiller found the chance to ride on the World Championships course at Stromlo Forest Park later this year too alluring.
Hannah resumed training just one month ago with the aim to prepare for the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials Championships in September.
"I've been training for about a month. The main idea for coming down here was to get an idea of the track for the World Championships," Hannah said. He claimed the fastest time in qualifying the previous day, but his final run his slower time of 2:45.24 was still enough to take the title.
"It was a lot windier today particularly the last straight. My legs were dying and it just shows all the training I need to get going. It's only a month so that's all you can expect I suppose," he said.
Before resuming training, the 25-year-old was 100kg and has since knocked off 15kg however the time off has had a positive effect. "Physically I am exhausted, but mentally I am sharper than I have been. My goal for the year is the World Championships here," Hannah said.
Second was fellow professional, Jared Graves of Toowoomba, just three and a half seconds behind Hannah. "Three tenths of second, that always kinds of hurts a bit," Graves said. "I guess everyone wants to win this race."
Canberra's Ben Corey and Amiel Cavalier from Wollongong claimed equal second with the identical time of 2:53.82.
The elite women's race was an international affair with French downhiller Emmeline Ragout claiming the fastest women's time of the day. The world championship bronze medallist, however, was ineligible to lay claim on the national title. Ragout rode outside of her qualifying time by five seconds but stamped the win with a respectable 3:15.59.
Second was Indy Boer from Canberra. The Hungarian citizen was also ineligible for the title which was claimed by Canberra's Claire Whiteman.
Whiteman was thrilled after winning a national title that had eluded her for many years. The 30-year-old had won three consecutive national series so a national jersey was welcomed. "There's a lot of places you can come unstuck. I just wanted to make it down with a clean run," she said. Whiteman will attempt a World Championship ride in her homeown later this year. She will have to head overseas to qualify.
Canadian rider Leigh Douglas from Tasmania placed fourth and the silver medal went to Canberra's Clara Smith and bronze to Sarah Douglas from Adelaide.
The course claimed some scalps with two time world champion, Sam Hill placing tenth and British rider, Brendan Fairclough in 24th. Under 19 top honors went to Rhys Willemse (men's race) and Holly Baarspul (women's race).
