Race 3 - October 25: Downhill finals

Schusler & Wilderman win Division 1 titles

Embrey fastest woman of the day while Thomas wins Division 2 title

The afternoon's downhill race moved the competition three miles away from the Lees-McRae campus to Sugar Mountain Resort.

In the men's Division 1 finals, Joey Schusler (University of Colorado-Boulder) made quick work of the former National Mountain Bike Series (NMBS) course, descending 1,200 feet down the face of Grandfather Mountain in 3:35:43, seven seconds faster than his teammate Brian Buell. Another pair of teammates from the University of Vermont, Adam Morse and Chris Scannel, finished just off the winning pace in third and fourth.

Fort Lewis College turned in a dominating performance going one-two-three in the women's Division 1 downhill. Last year's champion Sage Wilderman was upstaged only by teammate Emma Millar who turned in a time of 5:10.41. Their Skyhawks teammate Alisha Gibson joined them in third with rival Lees-McRae's Hannah Trimble earning fourth.

Michael Thomas of Appalachian State University had an impressive 3:49.47 to win the men's Division 2 downhill 10 seconds ahead of his teammate Steve Trottier.

Robyn Embrey (Sierra Nevada College) stepped-up her fourth-place performance from a year ago winning the DII women's downhill in formidable fashion and clocking the fastest female time of the day.
