Jackson and Smith take home overall victories

The Ultimate Ride, Stage 7, served as the final stage of the Anaconda MTB Enduro, and it was another gruelling affair, incorporating many of the unique aspects of this race into a single stage. Riders rode a combination of windy singletrack, corrugated 4WD roads with varied sandy and rocky sections to test them. With both the men's and women's overall race winners still hanging in the balance, it made for an exciting finale.
Exhausted after completing six stages in five days, the competitors used every last ounce of energy to finish the final stage. Racing from scenic Telegraph Station with a unique start across the dry and sandy Ross River bed with most riders choosing to dismount and run their bikes before toppling over unable to push through the sand. 50km later, they finished with a steep 150m hill climb to a lookout near the Power & Water water tank (Sadadeen Tank).
The stage saw second placed male Perren Delacour take a big fall, gashing his arm about 10km from the finish forcing him to bandage himself up while the lead pack continued to the finish. Most, unaware of the chaos behind them continued to fight for the win with Aiden Lefmann the victor in a sprint up the final hill in two hours, 15 minutes and 16 seconds with eventual overall winner Jackson close behind.
With an average speed of 23 km an hour Lefmann was pleased with the win and said that he improved as the week progressed. He said he felt good today despite the effort of the other six stages.
Jackson who set up the event win by a solid first stage was equally pleased with his form this week. The race proved to be a family affair for him with his talented mother Carolyn, winning the Vintage women and his sister Melinda, placing high amongst the top open women. His consistency in placing in each stage contributed to the overall first place. Attributing the win to mental toughness and the ability to concentrate and push himself in the tricky conditions, Jackson will take home the AUS$2,500 in prize money.
Ben Mather finished third in stage seven while Delacour finished a credible fourth and only two minutes behind the leader after his crash. Rushing straight to hospital for stitches, Delacour showed what the sport is all about demonstrating camaraderie in congratulating his compatriots before retreating quickly to be treated. Holding on to second place overall, Delacour had reason to still manage a smile, with also injured Matt Fleming in third pace overall.
Imogen Smith, who stole back the leader's yellow jersey from Naomi Hansen in the night race last night, continued her winning streak by winning in two hours, 47 minutes and 17 seconds. Smith, who panicked when she thought she'd lost her way at one point in the race, was relieved to find a marker pointing her towards the finish where she pushed hard across the line, all smiles. She needn't have worried as rival in close second place before the stage Hansen had a lackluster performance finishing nearly eight minutes later. A fall at the halfway mark broke Hansen's concentration and she focused on finishing thereafter.
