Sprint finish ends night-time race

In an exciting night-time race on the same course racers time trialed this morning, stage six saw second-placed GC racer Perren Delacour take the bunch sprint by leading into the final corner, still some 300m out. Perren was the strongest rider of the evening and none of the others could get around the seasoned ex-pro. Delacour completed the course within four minutes of the time he raced in the morning. Conditions were "sketchy but fun," he said.
Important for the overall standing, Adrian Jackson finished fourth, and although he was only three seconds down across the line, he also missed out on all time bonuses which allowed Perren to creep within one minute and 16 seconds of Jackson overall. Jackson has led the race from his victory in stage one, although perhaps his biggest fight to keep it will come in the final stage as Perren has beaten him on four of the five stages since that first morning
Perhaps more remarkably, there have been six different stage winners in the men's race in the six stages to date. With one of the pre-race favourites Shaun Lewis,as well as former Australian 24 hour champion James Williamson, yet to notch a win, there is every chance that the trend could continue.
If the men's race promised still more excitement, the women's race already provided it, with the yellow jersey changing back to its original owner. Imogen Smith didn't win the stage (that honour went to Victorian and third place overall Jenni King), but she did manage to take four minutes out of Naomi Hansen. That, coupled with a stage bonus and Hansen's uncharacteristic bonus-less fourth place finish meant that Imogen returned to the yellow jersey with a one minute, 23 second lead.
Stage seven will wrap up the overall tomorrow morning.
