Lefmann and Smith win individual time trial

Stage five started on another beautiful sunny morning at Alice Springs Golf Club at the base of the majestic MacDonnell Ranges at 9:00 am. Most of the riders were fortunate enough to get a well deserved sleep in a after the marathon stage yesterday, but it was the slowest riders that posted the longest times (up to nine hours) who commenced the stage five individual time trial first. Riders went off at 45 second intervals.
The stage ended up being a case of whose bike could withstand the conditions as riders rode through the Anaconda finish arch bruised, battered and weary after four solid days of toughing it out in the rugged and demanding terrain. With broken chains, flat tyres and busted frames, shocks and forks they managed to complete the course of flowing singletrack and sections of 4WD arriving back at the golf club dusty and sweaty.

With five different winners of the five stages so far, the men's race remained competitive. Eight men are still in contentino for the overall win. Taking out stage five in an impressive 52 minutes and 42 seconds was Aiden Lefmann ahead of the consistent Perren Delacour just 25 seconds slower and Matthew Fleming, Adrian Jackson and Tim Bennett hot on their heels. Lefmann claimed the secret to his success today was not going too hard too early and staying steady in the tricky singlerack sections. Claiming to be relatively conservative and, "not riding to win but to be smooth", he was dobbed in by his mates as being technically superior. Averaging 24.9km an hour he admits that time flew and that he enjoyed the course more than when he traversed over it at the end of the marathon stage yesterday when he just wanted to be finished.
Imogen Smith got her own back on Naomi Hansen by finishing as the fastest woman after Hansen beat her in the last two stages. Both are good friends, but fierce rivals, and Smith was pleased to bridge the gap in the overall standings by clocking one hour, six minutes with Hansen a mere 40 seconds behind. A win nonetheless, Smith is also confident that she can get a better advantage in tonight's night race as she's a more experienced at racing in the dark than Hansen. Hansen, relatively happy with her result said that her aim was, "to not lose too much time to Imogen", as she knows that Smith is good at the shorter length races such as this morning and stage six tonight.
Stage six starts tonight 6:30 pm at the Alice Springs Golf Course and is a 23km loop finishing at the same location. It will be a night race with all 210 competitors using head lamps to light the way.
