Jackson and Smith win Anaconda opener

The first of five days of racing of the Anaconda MTB Enduro was more than a warm-up and tested riders over varied and tricky terrain of rocks and sand. Locals and those people who were fortunate enough to compete in the former Central Australian Bike Challenge (CABA), the race that the Anaconda MTB Enduro reincarnates, were at a definite advantage as the unique Red Centre conditions proved a challenge to those who had not ridden in them previously.
A supportive crowd gathered to witness the start at the velodrome in perfect mild, but sunny conditions. The 210 strong field had a neutral start completing one lap of the track in jovial spirits before the true racing started on the outskirts of town. About 5km into the 37km stage one, the challenges began with several kilometers of hilly and technical singletrack.
The winner of the stage by only a few millimetres was Adrian Jackson from Victoria ahead of Matthew Fleming of NSW. Jackson, winner of Wildside 2008, proved he's in good form by beating Fleming in a sprint to the finish in one hour, 48 minutes and 25 seconds. Jackson and Fleming, both former CABA competitors, and Fleming as the 2006 winner used their local experience to take the stage ahead of third place national representative Aiden Lefmann and Peren Delacour just a minute behind.

The finish line smile on Fleming's face was short lived as he contemplated the challenge of four more stages ahead. He said, "This is definitely one of the harder stages of the week; jumping from rocks to sand, back and forth, chasing through gears, trying to find what was comfortable, made it extremely difficult to get a rhythm."
Women's winner Imogen Smith of Brisbane passed fast-starting Naomi Hansen of Noosa to take the win in two hours 19 minutes with Hansen five minutes behind. Smith who has been participating in the Australian Institute of Sport road riding talent program for the Beijing Olympics claimed pre-race that her mountain bike skills were a bit rusty and was elated to win the stage, again proving that experience in these conditions prevails. Coming third in the 2006 CABA she has come back a stronger and more experienced rider and has established herself as the race favourite.
Hansen was happy to finish second describing the course as "so different to anything she had ever ridden before". In fact, Naomi laughed, "There were moments when I just wanted to throw my bike at the sand!" The thick, tyre- engulfing sand, loose rocks and large boulders made stage one exciting and testing for the riders!
With the promise of the degree of difficulty decreasing slightly for the remainder of the race the riders headed to their respective hotels for a few hours of recovery before stage two time trial up Anzac Hill in the centre of Alice Springs town this afternoon where it is expected that a large crowd will support the competitors as they are set-off every 30-seconds on a lactate building 60 second effort.
