MTB index page for all MTB content Trans Germany - NEGermany, June 1-7, 2008Stage 1 - June 1: Erbach - Frammersbach, 102.08 kmTeam Texpa-Simplon winsGerum & Golderer take Yellow Jersey
They weren't considered the biggest favorites, but World Cup riders Lukas Gerum and Roland Golderer won the first stage from Erbach im Odenwald to Frammersbach/Spessart. Their Team Texpa-Simplon secured the victory after 102 kilometres and 2,257 metres of elevation gain in a time of 2:30.14 hours. The first 29km of the race were considered neutral. Team Vaude-Simplon with Martin Kiechle and Jan Schmidt finished second closely followed by French-Austrian connection CRAFT & Friends / Team Bianchi with two-time European Champion Thomas Dietsch and Martin Kraler. The latter pair unluckily crashed after 40km which gave the eventual winners their chance to break away. "We are very happy that we were able to win here in front of this amazing crowd. After Martin Kraler had crashed we noticed the gap between us and them so we gave it a go and pedalled away," said Golderer. Kraler said he had to wait for several minutes after his crash for the pain to subside." Favorites win women's stageOn the ladies side, Team Rocky Mountain fulfilled expectations as Alison Sydor and Pia Sundstedt (2:57.56) gained a comfortable lead on title defending Norgaard sisters Anna-Sofie and Kristine from Team Cube WLS (3:01.21). But, the lead could have been even bigger as the Canadian-Finish pairing took a detour at kilometre 40. "We had to catch up and just took over, keeping on our speed," explained Pia Sundstedt. Kerstin Brachtendorf and Danièle Troesch from Team Fiat-Rotwild Damen" came in third another five minutes back. In the masters' category, last year's dominating Czechs from Sachsenmasters continued where they left off in 2007: by winning. At the inaugural edition of the race Milan Spolc and Robert Novotny won all eight legs. In stage one they continued that strea with a time of 2:40:32. Ralph and Timo Berner of Erbach im Odenwald (2:44.25) rounded out the podium together with Team Schoeneck including Heiko Gessner and Bernd Weinhold (2:52.16). In the mixed category, a tandem team named Sachsen Land von Welt finished first. Matthias Mende and former biathlon athlete Katja Beer pedalled the distance in 3:03.03 hours, followed by Team Bergstrasse/Velo-Franz with Jakub Blaha and Milena Landtwing (3:05.14). Sam Baeten and Agnes Neumann from Seeberger finished third (3:09.28). In the category of the oldest participants, the supermasters, the pairing Frankenpower consisting of Klaus Dumler and Harald Hoehn won the first stage of the grand masters (3:14.23). Eight minutes behind were Manfred Ertl and Georg Schollerer of Quest (3:22.34), another two minutes later, Ferdi Koller and Ueli Schuermann from the Long Time Bikers came in (3:24.57). Stage 2 - June 2: Frammersbach - Bischofsheim, 82.89 kmThe peloton will head for the highest elevation of the day after cutting cross the wild-romantic Schondra Valley. After passing the Wuerzburg Haus and crossing the Guckapass the cyclists will pedal up to the top of Kreuzberg. Its peak is marked with three prominent crosses and provides fantastic panoramic views.
