Race 6 - February 24: Downhill

Two Stage Bike's Glenn Haden took out the National Downhill Championships today by just two seconds ahead of Cameron Cole (Christchurch), while Wyn Masters (Taranaki) came home to take third.

In the elite women's event Sheryl McLeod firmly announced her return to the national scene after a few years break with a comprehensive win . Harriet Harper (Blenheim) was in second ahead of defending champion Scarlett Hagen who lost her tyre part way down the track.

Blustery winds and intermittent showers made for a hard day out on the exposed course for the riders with upper body strength and good technical skills required to stay on track, but despite the challenging weather conditions there was strong crowd support for the 220 riders who took on Long Gully in Wellington.

A new addition to the Championships schedule was the short track cross country. Held in the lunch break at the downhill, riders took on the dirt criterium and provided spectators with a thrilling finish in the open men’s class with Mike Northcott (Tokoroa) and Jack Bauer (Nelson) fighting throughout for the lead. A sprint finish up the final climb saw Commonwealth Games representative Northcott narrowly take the win.

Under 19 rider Monique Avery finished off a successful weekend with a win in the open women's class ahead of Sara McDonald (Dunedin) and Sara Taylor.
