Cavalier claims win after mountain bike drought

"It was a good run I just gave it everything I had," Cavalier said at the finish.
The usually dry You Yang's Regional Park just north of Geelong received torrential rain leading into Sunday's downhill event making practice runs tough. No rainfall during qualifying and final runs resulted in the track getting quicker as it dried. Downhillers were impressed with the course even though according to some it lacked starting height.
"This track is also really physical and there is so much pedalling," said Cavalier. "I got a bit of a heads up from a local that the course was gong to be a bit different."
To prepare Cavalier changed his traditional heavier downhill bike to a lighter frame. "I think I chose the right bike," he said. "I did more road kilometres so I can pedal a harder gear."
Cavalier had planned his final run to perfection beating nearest rival Brad Kelly from Newcastle by well over two seconds. "I kept it smooth ad tried to backside everything. I tried not to blow up before the finish," Cavalier said.
Third was Adelaide's Will Rischbieth. The 19-year-old Joshua Button from Coffs Harbour finished in fifth position.

Strong competition meant Whiteman had to devise a strategy.
"My plan was to pedal, pedal, pedal," she said. "I knew I sat down in qualifying so I knew I just needed to pedal even if I was falling over at the bottom."
Previous leader Leigh Douglas from Tasmania finished in third posting a 3:01.44.
The next national event will be the National Championships to be held in late January in Canberra. The fourth round of the National Series will be held in Mt Buller late January with the final round being hosted in Hobart at the end of February. The Oceania Championships will be in Thredbo on March 20
