MTB index page for all MTB content Michaux Endurance Series #3: Terror of Teaberry - NEMichaux State Forest, Pennsylvania, USA, September 16, 2007Eatough and Sorenson dominate Terror of Teaberry and series' podiumsBy Harlan Price Trek/VW racers Chris Eatough and Cheryl Sorenson showed fine form at the Terror of Teaberry this past weekend in the forests above Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After the first two races, Sorenson needed only to complete the day in a reasonable time to lock up the series, while Eatough was under a bit more pressure, with only three minutes separating him from Harlan Price (Independent Fabrication). In the end, both riders showed their late season form to be dialed to eleven. The new fall chill hung in the air at the start of the last Michaux Endurance Series 50 miler of the year. On the line joining Eatough and Price were almost a hundred riders looking for a solid day of riding some pristine singletrack covered in rocks, moss and logs. Recent winner of the Shenandoah Mountain 100, Jeff Schalk (Trek/VW) was there, along with Cannondale/ Bear Naked riders Brandon Draugelis and Rob Lichtenwaller. In the singlespeed field, a father for only three days, Brian Keich (Independent Fabrication) had a 45 minute advantage in the series, over Topher Valenti (BikeSport), and was looking to have a good day. Tim Daugherty (Cannondale/ BearNaked) was motivated for some revenge after a DNF in the summer race of the series effectively took him out of the overall. The local, who was the only fixed gear rider at the Shenandoah Mountain 100, pulled out a freewheel for the day's 7,500 feet of climbing. From the start, Price kept Eatough in sight and the two made a habit of dropping Schalk in the singletrack, only to have him come up from behind on the climbs. At about mile eight, Price fell off the pace of the two Trek riders. About halfway, Schalk threw off his chain between his cassette and rear derailleur, and walked for four hours before coming to an aid station. Price held off Draugelis to take second for the day and in the series overall, while Draugelis did the same with third place. The women's race went Cheryl Sorenson, who proved she is once again the mistress of Michaux with her third win in the series. Not far behind, proving that she was learning the ways of the forest was Michelle Schnieder (VisitPA) who kept the pressure on for most of the day. In the end only eight minutes separated the two riders with Andrea Walheim in third, but not a threat. Singlespeeders tend to show to the Michaux races in large numbers and could almost be blamed for the institution of the longer laps several years ago. This year, 21 single geared brethren threw down for a day of fun by instituting alternative rules of slow starts and mandatory breaks. Still there was a bit of pride on the line for Tim Daugherty (Cannondale/BearNaked) whose mechanical in the last race put him out of series contention. At Teaberry he took first in fine style with the top four singlespeeders all within three minutes of Daugherty''s 5:03:12 finishing time. The day's results counted double - in both the Mid Atlantic Super Series standings as well as the Michaux series. Racers had the option to tackle 10 or 25 mile distances instead of the full 50 miles.
