MTB index page for all MTB content Canada Cup #2 - 2Bromont, Quebec, Canada, May 19-20, 2007Rocky Mountain racers win men's and women's races and lead overallTeam Rocky Mountain-Haywood's World Cup pros Max Plaxton and Marie-Helene Premont dominated the cross-country at the second round of the Canada Cup National Series in Bromont, Quebec. Both riders rode away from their respective fields to win. Premont now leads the Canada Cup standings for women with a perfect win record, while another Rocky Mountain-Haywood rider - Raphael Gagné - takes over the pro men's lead for the series after two races. The Bromont circuit is one of the oldest and most respected of the international circuit, with a tradition stretching back to the world championships in 1992. While there have been modifications over the years, the basic design is still one that tests all the skills and endurance of a mountain biker. Plaxton summed it up, "This is the best course by far that I've raced this year. It's a lot of fun, with good climbs, technical stuff, rocks ... I always like to race here." The men did six laps and the women five, with both categories on the course at the same time. Gagne bolted to the front on the first climb for the men, followed by Plaxton. Plaxton was biding his time, and went by at the top of the second (main) climb as the race went into singletrack. After that, he gradually extended his lead to eventually win by 3:33 over Mat Toulouse (Maxxis). "Last year, I started to push right away from the gun." explained Plaxton. "It's not exactly boring to be out there alone, but it is nice to back it off a bit and see how others are riding." "My Rocky Mountain Haywood teammate, Raphael, started well, so I got on his wheel to the top of the climb and then went to the front," said Plaxton. "But he was still going pretty well - he was definitely pushing me on the downhill. I was taking it a little easy on the downhill because I crashed there yesterday (Friday) and it numbed my hand a bit ... there's some pretty important races coming up." Gagné was riding steadily in second, but Toulouse put on a big push in the third lap to reel him in, and then dropped him in the fourth. "I can start fast, and this course suits me," said Gagné, "But Mat was faster in the last two laps. I was mainly happy to keep the gap low until the end and take over the Canada Cup Series lead." In the women's race, Prémont was already 30 seconds ahead by the end of the first climb, with the chase group led by Trek-Terrascape team mates Mical Dyck and Lea Davison. However, in the final lap and half, Prémont's strength began to show, as she pulled away to win by three and a half minutes. Prémont's biggest problem turned out to be the men she was catching - over half the men's field, despite their starting two minutes ahead. "By the third lap I was catching lots of men and I had to slow down for them in the singletrack." This was a perfect score of two consecutive wins in the series as Premont had won just a week ago in Bai St Paul. She holds the lead for the overall Series Championship and joined team mate Gagné on the leaders podium. Many of the top riders will race next weekend at the World Cup in Offenburg, Germany on May 26. Gatto takes the National Series lead in Pro Womens Downhill for Rocky Mountain Haywood.!! Canada's best young downhillers took to the top step on the podium at the opening round of the downhill Canada Cup in Bromont, Quebec on Sunday when Micayala Gatto (Rocky Mountain-Haywood) and Steve Smith won the women's and men's titles. Smith and Gatto win downhillDespite the threat of rain all day, the inclement weather held off until the awards ceremony, when a brief sprinkle came down. However, rain earlier in the week made upper sections of the 2.5 kilometer course sloppy and slippery, with many riders coming through the finish line caked in thick brown mud after going down in one of the many corners. Micayla Gatto was the first woman down, and her winning time of 5:25.774 was a full 25 seconds faster than second place Marie-Eve Marcotte. Amber Zirnhelt (Brodie Bikes/Loeka) was third, a further eight seconds back. Several other elite Canadian women were not at the race. "It was kind of lonely ... Katrina Strand is out with injuries, and Danika (Schroeter) is missing the season to recover from a neck injury she got in New Zealand last year (at the Worlds). But this is my first Canada Cup win as a pro, so yeah, I'm pretty stoked," said Gatto. "The course changed a lot over the last few days. On Thursday I thought: 'Oh my gosh this is an amazing course' ... Then today, it was: 'Oh my god, this isn't even the same course!' There were big holes, and lots of mud everywhere; it was just all the riders that have been on it, I guess," said Gatto. "This was one of the longer courses that we do, so fitness was a key ingredient," finished Gatto. "I don't usually like to say this, but this was kind of a man's course - you needed good strong arms and legs to pull your bike over and through everything." Canadian Steve Smith (Cove Factory) won the men's race in 4.22.922 ahead of compatriot Justin Brown (Cycles Solutions) and American Geritt Beytagh (Morewoodbikes).
