Sundstedt wins in Gran Canaria

Finn Pia Sundstedt won the elite women's race at the Mountain Bike World Cup Marathon opener in Gran Canaria after racing a 77km course in 3:27:17. The German Ivonne Kraft and the Frenchwoman Helene Marcouyre, took second and third spots.

Sundstedt was hands-down the pre-race favorite, and she finished more than five minutes ahead of second. She said she found it hard to dominate her rivals during the race, yet she lead through every checkpoint throughout the race. By the second control point she had the race under control. At this point, Swiss rider Anna Enocsson retired. Enocsson had finished third in the 2005 Marathon World Cup and was another favorite for the victory.
