Victorian Andrew Bell storms home in the Tasmanian 12 hour
The third annual Tasmanian 12 hour mountain bike (MTB) race was held on Saturday March 3 at Four Springs, outside of Launceston - the biggest mountain bike event in the state.
Andrew Bell, who has earned a reputation as Australia's best MTB endurance specialist, took a convincing win with over 5 laps (almost 60km) on his nearest rival. Local competitors had nothing on the Victorian, as he rode solid, consistent laps throughout the day - a total of 234km to take the win.
Bell is currently preparing for the National 24 hour Mountain Bike Championships, which are to be held on April 7 & 8 in Canberra. He placed second at the Nationals last year, and is working towards a strong result this year. "This Tassie race was perfect timing for the lead up to the Nationals. I'm feeling much stronger than this time last year, and looking forward to the Championships at Easter", he said.
Bell also had another reason for choosing a Tassie race as part of his preparation plan. "I've been looking forward to racing in Tassie for some time as my family hail from Hobart" said Bell. "My grandfather (Bevan Robinson) was a respected bike racer here in the 1940's and 1950's, so I really wanted to come over and race in my family's home state. It's great to be here."
