The Pacific Traverse

Stage two of the BC Bike race saw more perfect racing weather as the forecast showers held off and partly cloudy skies kept racers cool over three major climbs 1,300m of total climbing for the day.
The 10km rolling start went much more smoothly than day one, as most racers knew where they stood in the field and there was little maneuvering for position. Onto the race course, two main groups formed and the race looked more like a European road event than a mountain bike race until the first aid station at 45 km. From there the racers got to work on two minor climbs before tackling the days biggest climb to Duck Lake, peaking at 3,100 feet of altitude, before descending into Port Alberini.
Although Stage 2 was the longest of the race, the blistering pace to aid station one made it seem much shorter to the racers, many of whom were able to hop wheels and draft their way for the first 45 km.
Several reports of racers going off course were heard after the race, with the third place team in the men's field (La Ruta/Sho-Air) and the second place team in the mixed-open field (Team BC) both experiencing delays.
First place Trek-VW solidified their hold on the GC by finishing in 4:34:06 and putting nearly six minutes into the Rocky Mountain team and taking their second consecutive stage win. Meanwhile, the La Ruta/Sho-Air squad held onto third in the GC at 45 minutes back after a fourth place finish today. Evan Plews and Bear Perrin of Capitol Subaru Cycling took third on the day, 34:39 behind La Ruta/Sho-Air.
The race split at the Duck Lake ascent when Calhoun hith a hole he couldn't climb out of. "Kevin had a moment," explained Hestler, who helped design the B.C. Bike Race course and is the event's spokesman. "He was running a little low on sugar, and that was a bad place to be low on anything."
There was no change at the top of the standings in any of the other two-rider categories, where teammates must stay within two minutes of each other or be hit with a time penalty.
Cynthia Young and Michelle Newton (Shore Girls Don't Cry) took their second stage win and continue to lead the women's overall. It's been a serendipitous pairing, considering Young and Newton originally signed up with different partners and only hooked up after their original team mates bailed out.
"We have some mutual friends, but we've only known each other for about three months," explained North Vancouver's Young, whose regular 9-to-5 job is mothering her two-year-old son.
David Harris and Lynda Wallenfels (Team Desert Cyclery/HealthFX) in open mixed; Randy Richmond and Sandy Mitchell (Gerick-Nelson) in veterans 80-plus; and Doug Nottebrock and Con Diamond (Kootenay-Okanagan Cooperative) in veterans 100-plus also all pulled out back-to-back stage wins and remained tops in their respective categories.
Tuesday's Stage 3 is an 82.5km north westerly run from Port Alberni to Cumberland. After a rolling on logging roads for the first two-thirds of the stage, the course heads into the famed technical single track of the Cumberland area. Among the trails on the menu is Bucket of Blood, named after a pub from Cumberland's early mining days.
