Race 2 - January 21: Cross country

Fiona McDermid and Marcus Roy took their second win and the first UCI points of the year in the second round of the NZCT National Mountain Bike Series in Dunedin. Over 130 riders rode a challenging, weather-affected course which saw many unable to finish due to mechanicals.

McDermid (Palmerston North) and Roy (Te Anau) rode through the lap point on their third and fourth laps respectively together, both a clear lead over their nearest rivals, with Eric Drower and Brenda Clapp some five minutes behind.

In her first year riding in the National Series, Auckland’s Kaytee Boyd had a strong ride to finish in third place, behind seasoned elite women’s competitor Brenda Clapp riding for Peak Fuel.

The 6.5km course through Bethunes Gully extended with a larger component of singletrack had competitors looking forward to returning to the regular National Series event. Howeve,r despite a week of sunshine leading into the event, a persistent rain resulted in an exceptionally muddy course, playing havoc on the riders bikes with multiple broken derailleurs and chains throughout all categories.

Riders will be competing in the National Championships next week in Nelson, with titles in cross country, downhill, four cross and hill climb to be decided. UCI points will also be available at those races.
