Kona 24 Hours of Old Pueblo
Tinker Juarez (Cannondale) and Sarah Kaufman (Roaning Mouse Cycles) won the solo men's and women's 24 Hours of Old Pueblo. Juarez won in convincing style; with his experience and fitness, he outclassed all other competitors.
The women's race saw a surprise victor in Kaufman. She assumed the lead after Lynda Wallenfels, who was leading, but crashed out of the race. Kaufman was mid-way through moving from the West to the East Coast; she stopped in Arizona for some to log some base miles in mild weather. Wallenfels is expected to recover fully from her crash.
Being so early in the season, other big name endurance racers joined the field to log base training time with various partners. Christina Begy raced with Janis Sandlin in the duo women's category to take second, and Cameron Chambers joined a four-person team called "Kansas Not Quite Square."
The 1,450 racers at the 24 hours of Old Pueblo were greeted with warm temperatures, dry weather, and clear skies. In the day time, it was 60 to 70 degrees (15 to 21 degrees C), and at night, temperatures dropped to about 40 degrees. Each lap took racers on a 15 mile (24 km) circuit starting and ending near a large expo area.
For the first time in the race's history, Kona sponsored it as part of Kona's Global 24 hours series. This year marked the first of a three-year sponsorship. Promoter Todd Sadow was pleased with the partnership. "We're are really grass roots and so is Kona."
