MTB index page for all MTB content Wildside MTB - NETasmania, Australia, January 28-31, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - January 28: Que River, 19kmPunctures cost Taberley as Jongewaard takes leadBy Joe Ward After a break from the freakish Tassie heat, riders lined up for Stage 2 from Que River to Tullah. The first 10 km of the stage is buff pebbly fireroad, just the recipe for fast racing and the occasional two wheel drift though blind corners! After a very loud gaseous distraction by one of the younger Cannondale-Maxxis team members 10 seconds before the gun, the elite men were off. Taberlay off the front within 200 meters, challenging all comers to play catch me if you can. But his lead was to be short lived, suffering a flat on the one of the many rocky and rutted downhills. After a quick repair Taberlay made it back to the group only to puncture again! His CO2 cartridges also failed, taking him 4 mins to get going. Teammate Jongewaard fresh from winning the STXC national championship 2 weeks ago and backing that up with a 9th place in the GC at the Tour Down Under showed he still has something left in the legs to power to the line in 42 min 40 secs another new course record. U-23s Adrian Jackson and Alistair Farley took 2nd and 3rd. Taberlays title defence looks in doubt as he now sits in 5th, 5 and a half minutes down on the leader Jongwaard. The womens race also had an upset with Niki Fisher cracking Lisa Mathison by over 2 minutes putting her into the overall lead. Katrin Van der Spiegel again placed 3rd keeping her 3rd overall. In the middle of the pack riders arrived grinning and not coated in the usual mud but dust! The carnage both mechanical and human attests to Wildsides claim of being not just a bike race, but an adventure. One rider tacoing a wheel in the morning stage, buying a new one at the lunch stop and whacking a flat spot in it by the close of racing today. This year sees the first tandem negotiating the wild terrain of Tassies west coast as well as a couple of singlespeeders who after tomorrows stage up Mt Murchison will be begging race sponsor SRAMs race rep Rob Eva for some of that companys 9 speed goods.
