Four-time Wildside champion Taberlay takes early lead

Unusually hot and dry conditions greeted competitors for the 1 stage of Wildside - powered by SRAM, Australia’s premier mountain bike stage race. The swampy meadows and running creeks of Cradle Mountain are noticeable dry this year making for fast racing.
With all eyes on Sid Taberlay the racing was furious from the gun with the 5-man team of Cannondale-Maxxis attempting to control the race. Aiden Lefman led up the long fireroad climb at Pencil Pine only to be attacked by Avanti’s Taberlay and Jongewaard at the top.
The attack worked, and Taberlay kept the power on building a 52 second lead over Jongewaard with a further minute and a half back to Alistair Farley (Giant). The dry conditions contributing to Taberlay smashing the course record by over 4 minutes.
In the women’s, it was newly crowned Under 23 national Champion Lisa Mathison all the way with Trek’s new signing Niki Fisher 25 seconds back and Mont 24 hour solo winner Katrin Van der Spiegel one minute back again.
