MTB index page for all MTB content New Zealand National MTB Championships - CNNelson, New Zealand, January 28-29, 2006Leuchs aims for GoldFrench-based Dunedin cross country rider Kashi Leuchs achieved his first of three goals in Nelson today (Sunday) by winning the National Mountain Biking cross country Championship title. Leuchs, who lists the National, Oceania and Commonwealth titles as his key goals before heading back to the World Cup circuit in April got off to a flying a start and did not look back. Meanwhile the scorching conditions, big crowds, high tension and fast times combined to make this weekend's National downhill and cross country Mountain Bike Championships a spectacular weekend of mountain biking all round. The Downhill National Championship on Saturday produced fast times on the 2.5 km course, with team mates Nathan Rankin and Glenn Haden taking first and second respectively with less than a second between them. Local rider Kieran Bennett (Nelson) was third. The elite women's field was lacking former world champions Vanessa Quin and Scarlett Hagan but did see Auckland rider Jennifer Mackgill produce a fast time to take the women's title. Rankin and Haden, who have dominated the downhill season in 2006, are heading to Europe following the Oceania Championships in March to further their preparation for the August World Championships being held in Rotorua. The elite men's cross country championship on Sunday started in high drama with newly selected Commonwealth Games rider Michael Northcott withdrawing ten seconds into the race after mass congestion on the first corner resulted in serious damage to his bike. Fellow Commonwealth Games rider Kashi Leuchs showed his true class by quickly gaining a comfortable lead for most of the race, with Marcus Roy and Clinton Avery (the third member of the Commonwealth Games Cross Country team) battling it out for second and third. Wellington's Rosara Joseph showed why she is New Zealand's best women's cross country rider by completely dominating her race. Joseph, who is travelling to England later in the year to take up her Rhodes Scholarship, came in ahead of in form Annika Smail and Commonwealth Games rider Robyn Wong in third.
