Willo rides a scorcher
James 'Willo' Williamson and Rosi King won the fifth N-Zo Sydney 12-Hour Saturday, taking out the solo men's and women's categories respectively on an unseasonally hot day at the Yellowmundi venue at the foot of the Blue Mountains.
The overall winning team was the Niterider trio of Australian elite riders Shaun Lewis, Perren Delacour and Matthew Fleming who clocked up 21 laps of the roughly 11km circuit - a mark that makes Williamson's solo achievement of 19 laps all the more remarkable. On an overall ranking, Williamson would have placed 12th.
A total of 917 competitors took part in this year's N-Zo 12-hour, an event and Australian record for a 12-hour mountain bike race. Starting at 9am, 295 riders ran to their bikes in an Le Mans start and headed out on the first lap. The course has been made slightly longer each year, and this year 11.5k of trails awaited competitors who ranged from first time competitors to 2004 Olympians Josh Fleming and Lisa Matheson.
48 solo competitors (42 male / 6 female) took on the challenge without the luxury of team-mates to share the load. Also of note were the 8 teams competing in the Juniors category, with serious racing and fun proving to be a good mix.
Neither Williamson nor King were ever seriously challenged for their solo victories, with the only starter capable of besting Willo, Saul Britton, substantially off the pace when he dropped out after 11 laps. The biggest challenge for all riders was the dry, hot weather and medics found themselves treating more than a few riders who were simply forgetting to drink.
As the day turned to evening and the lighting systems came out, things cooled down, King and Willo continued to hammer out laps while a jump display kept team riders entertained between laps. Earlier in the day a 12-minute kids' race gave the younger ones something to do - that's if they weren't competing. The youngest 12-hour team racer was just ten years old.
Team Cyclingnews' day was hit by disaster early when technical editor John Stevenson succumbed to a terminal mechanical on his first lap. A too-short chain on a suspension bike is a really bad idea, but fortunately snapped gear hangers, twisted derailleurs and bent sprockets can all be replaced. Matt Barr and Kim O'Sullivan soldiered on regardless, salvaging a little team honour.
