Tinker Juarez wins Mountain Mayhem
Cannondale Mountain Bike Racing Team report
After a bad race in the NORBA U.S 24 Hours National Championships (May 28-29, Spokane, Washington) which saw him and other top contenders buckle in unusually hot weather, Tinker Juarez (Cannondale) bounced back nicely with a trip to the UK to compete in the SAAB Salomon 24hr Mountain Mayhem at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, Western England (June 25-26), known as the UK's premier 24 hour event. Juarez won with 17 laps completed.
Perfect weather the week before turned nasty by Friday the 24th and torrential rain, thunder storms and lightning drenched the 10.5-mile course, changing it from a fast, dusty circuit to a sticky, energy-sucking mess in minutes.
"(This was) definitely one of, if not the hardest 24 hour events on the circuit. I was surprised at how much climbing there was each lap and the conditions early on were super tough," Juarez said of the event and the fact that, without further rain, the course began to dry and firm throughout the day.
Starting out with a fast run and opening lap put Tinker into the leading position, although he didn't have it all his own way. Badly ripping his rear tire meant that it was not possible to simply put a new inner tube in and continue. It looked like it was going to be a 7 mile run to the pits where the wheel could be replaced, when a fellow rider, seeing Tinker in trouble, sacrificed his own race and kindly offered Tinker his rear wheel.
"Patrick Adams has done an excellent, excellent job at hosting such an event," said Juarez. "Everything was absolutely A1."
The women's solo class was won by top British endurance mountain biker Jenn O'Connor, while the elite category went to the Scott UK team of Stuart Bowers, Oli Beckinsale, Nick Craig, and Dave Collins.
