Race 1 - July 9: Women downhill
Jonnier takes the race and overall lead

The women attacked the course first at one-minute intervals to allow the dust to settle between riders. Rider after rider dropped into the final chute each shaving precious seconds off of the previous riders time. With only five riders left, it was New Zealander Scarlet Hagen (Iron Horse-Mad Catz) occupying the coveted hot seat and assured of her first ever podium position, which level remained to be determined. Tracy Moseley (Kona) hit short by 16 seconds, Marielle Saner (Maxxis-MSC) was another 2 seconds in arrears, Kathy Pruitt (Luna MTB) was just off of her pace. And, with only a single rider left to come into sight the young Kiwi looked to be headed to the top steps of the rostrum.
Sabrina Jonnier (Intense) rocketed out of the starting house knowing the time to beat. The spectators knew that Jonnier had the winning run as she exited the trees and hit the final bermed corner. With a 12 second advantage Jonnier claimed the crown for the day and retained her overall leadership in the World Cup Series. "I was very nervous this morning but I knew this was a perfect course for me," said Jonnier, "I decided in Brazil that I would win this race here in Angel Fire; obviously I'm very happy."
