2005 NZ Community Trust Mountain Bike National Series - E2

Round 2 - Dunedin, New Zealand, January 23, 2005

Rounds one and two of the XC Series have seen large numbers of competitors - more than previous years - indicating a growth in the sport. On an international level, two Austrian riders have come out to New Zealand - in part for a holiday, but also to use our NZ Series as a training ground for the Europe race season.

Stefan Mattersberger is competing amongst the Pro-Elites and had a great start finishing in second position at Christchurch and ninth in Dunedin. Riders praised the Dunedin course which started on Forrester Park and crossed over into Bethunes Gully. All were pleased to be able to race on a dry track, as last year it was very wet and muddy. As one rider put it "I was able to ride and not run this year!"

There was some fierce competition in this Dunedin Round as the pro-elite riders were competing for prize money and valuable UCI points to up their international rankings. Mike Northcote, now based in Taupo, took out first position in a time of 2 hours and 29 seconds, making it the second win for him over the other 25 competitors. It was probably Tim Wilding of Taupo who stole the show though, coming in only 34 seconds behind Northcote to earn second position. This is the best result ever for Tim and he was just over the moon: "It was an awesome track - technically challenging but enjoyable at the same time, with lots of variety and climbing, which I love." he said post-race, with a huge grin. This is a real boost for his confidence and it will be interesting to see how he goes in the remaining four rounds.

In the Pro-Elite Women's field, although small in comparsion to the Men's, was still very strong. Rosara Joseph (Christchurch) finished first again, making it an excellent start for her in the 2005 Series. At only 22 years old and in her first year of riding in the Pro-Elite category, Rosara should have a great future in cross country. She has also recently taken up road biking to help with endurance training, and last year in Nelson she raced in her first major event "Tour de Femme" coming fifth overall and winning the U23 field.

Our highest international ranked rider, Robyn Wong, finished in second position. Wong is just starting to get back into training with goals to be in more in form for March/April this year, where she will be competing in not only major XC events but also road racing for the NZ team. Annika Smail, who is based in Auckland, had another great ride to finish in third position - a new comer to the pro-elite field, she is proving her worth.
