The course will be used at the August 2006 for the UCI World Mountain Bike and Trials Championships. This will be the first time the World Championships have been in the southern hemisphere since Cairns, Australia, in 1996. Quin’s verdict on the brand new track on Mount Ngongotaha was very positive. "It’s fast, flowing and fun," Quin said, after her run. "It’s got heaps of potential and will make a great World’s course. The team who built it has done an awesome job." There was an intriguing showdown in the Pro Elite Men’s Downhill. Local Rotorua young gun Des Curry was fastest in seeding with New Zealand’s most experienced rider, John (JK) Kirkcaldie from Wellington, breathing down his neck. In the race, Kirkcaldie was on fire, rocketing down the mountain in 3.09.53 to see off all the young pretenders. Curry was second in 3.13.40. Nathan Rankin of Levin had a fantastic start to the season, before breaking his wrist. The injury still hasn’t healed completely. But Rankin still managed third in 3.18.47. Nelson’s Justin Leov, ranked number 12 in the world in 2004 and the winner of this summer’s national series, withdrew with an elbow injury.
