MTB index page for all MTB content New Zealand National XC series #6 - E2Auckland, New Zealand, February 20, 2005Northcott and Joseph wrap up seriesThe Pro-Elite Men and Women's category both saw new series winners this year - Michael Northcott (Mangakino) and Rosara Joseph of Christchurch. Both riders winning each round they competed in. Northcott, an Aluminium joiner, came second last year and has managed to take the title off Stuart Houltham who had the NZ Series over four years. Although Northcott had the series tied up before the finals thanks to consistent, great riding, the next overall placings came down to this sixth round. Only 20 points separated the following four riders: Wayne Hiscock (Wellington), Aaron Tuckerman (Blenheim) Marcus Roy (Te Anau) and the only international competitor for the series in Pro-Elite, Stefan Mattersberger (Austria). (you earn 60 for a first place, 54 for second and 49 for third) so it could have gone anyway for these competitors. Marcus Roy unfortunately crashed and so put himself out of contention and it was left to the remaining three to battle it out. It was Hiscock who came second giving him second overall placing and Tuckerman who rode well to finish third on the day and third overall in the series. Joseph, a 22 year old who graduated last year with a law degree, made a stunning debut into the women's Pro-Elite field by winning every round she competed in. She has only been mountain biking for three years and has been described as a "machine" by fellow competitors. Former Swiss rider Annika Smail, who is now based in Auckland, and Sonia Foote, the 2004 NZ Champion went into this last round on equal points for second position. It was Foote of Rotorua that managed to head off Smail taking second overall position and Smail third. This sixth and final round of the series was also a UCI race - meaning valuable prize money and international points were up for grabs. Prize money was awarded to first ten men and first 4 women in Pro-Elite category. The NZ Downhill National Champs will be held in Rotorua - Sunday 27 February - on the same course as the World Champs that will be here next year.
