MTB index page for all MTB content New Zealand National DH series #5 - CNWellington, February 12, 2005Narrow victory for KirkcaldieIt was a particularly windy day at the second-to-last round of the Community Trust National Series, which threw (literally) a lot of the riders unfamiliar with how to handy these kinds of conditions. One rider who was completely at home was John Kirkcaldie, who made his debut at this round of the series. Kirkcaldie, originally of Wellington, is New Zealand's most experienced top level Downhill Mountain Biker. He is the 2004 NZ Champion and has also been the USA Downhill Champ twice. Kirkcaldie, having returned from competing in North America last year where he came fourth overall in the NORBA (National Off-Road Bicycle Association) series and sixth at the 2004 UCI World Cup Race in Calgary, Canada, breezed through the track to take out first position beating the series leader, Justin Leov of Blenhiem. Kirkcaldie used this round as part of his build up for his next US race season which starts in April. Nathan Rankin (Levin), who was in second position overall in the series, was unable to compete as he broke his wrist in the Dunedin round on the 22 January. Rankin did however race in the following round at Blenhiem with a cast on and even managed to come second and third in the two races but was told not to race in Wellington. He is planning on competing at the finals in Auckland next weekend but after that he may need to rest his wrist for at least a couple of months. Vanessa Quin did not race at this round, leaving it wide open for Scarlett Hagen to take out both races in pro-elite women. The course at Long Gully was the same one used for the NZ Champs last year, with some improvements for the riders to have "more fun". The sixth and final rounds of the Community Trust National Series will be held on Saturday 19 (Downhill) and Sunday 20 (Cross Country) February, in the Hunua Forest, south east of Auckland.
