Queensland downhillers top national series

Four Queensland Downhill Mountain Bike riders took out the top places in Round 4 of the National Series today at Kooralbyn. Cairns rider, Mick Hannah won with Toowoomba’s Jared Graves second and two Gold Coast based riders Nathan Rennie and Chris Kovarik third and fourth respectively.

Cairns rider Mick Hannah proved his point by qualifying quickest and then riding the fastest time of the day in the final run with an impressive 1.49:11. Hannah beat Toowoomba rider, Jared Graves and National Series Leader and World Number 4, Nathan Rennie.

Hannah now moves into second place overall and will race the final round in Mt Bulla in March, with a chance to take out the Series. After being a bridesmaid in the first two rounds, Hannah broke a wheel in the third round and was not able to finish. “Today I ran a lighter bike and it helped,” explained Hannah. “Nathan’s a fair way ahead so I don’t think I’ll be able to catch up to him,” explained Hannah about the Series.

Jared Graves from Toowoomba used his fitness to pedal his way into second. “I knew the top five would be very close in time,” pointed out Graves who was a mere 76 hundredth of a second behind Hannah. Graves plan to gain confidence from the event was fulfilled when he beat Nathan Rennie, currently 4th in the World Rankings. Rennie still maintains his Series lead with 270 points. “Today wasn’t super important. I still keep the lead,” explained Rennie.

The Elite Women’s race sawfrom Newcastle secure her lead in the Series. Canberra’s Claire Whiteman came second. Whitman crashed early in her final run which gave McNaughton a comfortable time advantage.
